[ Oldies Brain Busters! ] This week's brain buster was called Simon Says The object of this game was to name the 14-letter mystery oldies act. Below is the paragraph the players needed to read with all the instructions they needed. Each instruction was a sentence that ended with a period. If the sentence began with the words "Simon Says" or words that sound like "Simon Says" then they had to follow the instruction (everything up to the period). If the sentence did NOT begin with those words or words that sound like those words then the players had to IGNORE the instruction (everything up to the period). They scored three points if they correctly identified the mystery act! Here's the instructions they were given: Simon Says you start out with the following puzzle line: Simon Says replace the 12th letter in the puzzle line with the the first letter of the last name of the guy who sang "Seven Little Girls (Sittin' In The Back Seat)." Cy Mon Sez swap the 14th letter in the puzzle line with the first letter in the puzzle line. Now change the fifth letter in the puzzle line to the letter which immediately follows it in the alphabet. Sigh Mun Says replace the next to last letter in the puzzle line with the first letter of the family name of the act that recorded the hits "Fairytale" and "Fire". If the first two letters in the puzzle line spell a preposition then change that preposition to "AT". Change each "E" in the puzzle line to an "O" except if it directly follows a "Y". Sy Mon Says replace the first "Y" in the puzzle line with the first letter of the third word of the title of the Four Tops hit whose last word is "Myself." Change the 9th letter in the puzzle line to the first letter of the nine-letter word that's both the name of Elvis's home and a Paul Simon album. Simon Sez change the last letter in the puzzle line to the third letter in the title of Bobby Goldsboro's smash in which "the angels came." Change the 4th letter in the puzzle line to the first letter of the 96 things that Question Mark and The Mysterians sang about (how sad, hint hint!!!). Sigh Mon Says jingle that ol' brain of yours and think of Mr. Dylan. Simon Says swap the 2nd letter in the puzzle line with the 11th letter in the puzzle line. Now think of "Little Star" by the Elegants (what a great one-hit wonder group they were.) Simon Sez replace the first "Y" in the puzzle line with the fourth letter in the title of Barbra Streisand's top ten hit from "Funny Girl." Change the 8th letter in the puzzle line to the letter which (incredibly!) is the first letter in each of Johnny Rivers' first four hits. Simun Says replace the first letter in the puzzle line with the second letter of the last word in the four word Blood, Sweat and Tears big hit in which the last two words rhyme. Replace the 5th letter in the puzzle line with the first letter in the first name of the Beatle who sang lead on "Yellow Submarine." Now change the next to last letter in the puzzle line to the next to last letter in the three-word Bruce Springsteen hit that begins with the word "Born". Simon Says change the last "O" in the puzzle to the first letter in the first word of the act that sang "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)". Simon Sez think about something that connects the New Christy Minstrels with the Kingsmen. Change the 7th letter in the puzzle line to the letter which immediately precedes it in the alphabet. Simon Says unscramble the 14 letters in the puzzle line to form the name of the mystery oldies act! HERE IS THE SOLUTION! Start with: COOLMYSTERYACT Simon Says replace the 12th letter in the puzzle line with the first letter of the last name of the guy who sang "Seven Little Girls (Sittin' In the Back Seat)." You must DO this instruction. You replace the A with an E (Paul Evans sang it). You now have: COOLMYSTERYECT Cy Mon Sez swap the 14th letter in the puzzle line with the first letter in the puzzle line. You must DO this instruction. You move the ending T to the first letter position and the starting C to the last letter position. You now have: TOOLMYSTERYECC Now change the fifth letter in the puzzle line to the letter which immediately follows it in the alphabet. The fifth letter in the puzzle line would be changed to N. However you must IGNORE this instruction. Sigh Mun Says replace the next to last letter in the puzzle line with the first letter of the family name of the act that recorded the hits "Fairytale" and "Fire". You must DO this instruction. You change the thirteenth letter from C to P (the Pointer Sisters had those hits). You now have: TOOLMYSTERYEPC If the first two letters in the puzzle line spell a preposition then change that preposition to "AT". The first two letters in the puzzle line are indeed a preposition ("TO") which therefore would be changed to "AT". However you must IGNORE this instruction. Change each "E" in the puzzle line to an "O" except if it directly follows a "Y". The ninth letter would be changed to an O. However you must IGNORE this instruction. Sy Mon Says replace the first "Y" in the puzzle line with the first letter of the third word of the title of the Four Tops hit whose last word is "Myself." You must DO this instruction. You replace the sixth letter (Y) with an H (the hit was "I Can't Help Myself"). You now have: TOOLMHSTERYEPC Change the 9th letter in the puzzle line to the first letter of the nine-letter word that's both the name of Elvis's home and a Paul Simon album. Elviss home and Paul Simons LP were Graceland. The first letter is G. The ninth letter (E) would be changed to G. However you must IGNORE this instruction. Simon Sez change the last letter in the puzzle line to the third letter in the title of Bobby Goldsboro's smash in which "the angels came." You must DO this instruction. You change the last letter in the puzzle to N (the hit was "Honey"). You now have: TOOLMHSTERYEPN Change the 4th letter in the puzzle line to the first letter of the 96 things that Question Mark and The Mysterians sang about (how sad, hint hint!!!). The hit was "96 Tears" so the 4th letter would be changed from L to T. However you must IGNORE this instruction. Sigh Mon Says jingle that ol brain of yours and think of Mr. Dylan. This is a hint to the answer. You should think of "Mr. Tambourine Man" which Bob Dylan wrote ("jingle", get it?). "Tambourine" is in the title of our mystery act's biggest hit. Simon Says swap the 2nd letter in the puzzle line with the 11th letter in the puzzle line. You must DO this instruction. You move the 2nd letter (O) to the 11th position and the 11th letter (Y) to the 2nd position. You now have: TYOLMHSTEROEPN Now think of "Little Star" by the Elegants (what a great one-hit wonder group they were.) They may have been great but you should IGNORE this instruction. Simon Sez replace the first "Y" in the puzzle line with the fourth letter in the title of Barbra Streisand's top ten hit from "Funny Girl." You must DO this instruction. You replace the first (and only!) Y in the 2nd position with a P (the hit was "People"). You now have: TPOLMHSTEROEPN Change the 8th letter in the puzzle line to the letter which (incredibly!) is the first letter in each of Johnny Rivers' first four hits. They all began with M ("Memphis," "Maybelline", "Mountain Of Love," "Midnight Special") so the 8th letter (T) would be changed to M. However you must IGNORE this instruction. Simun Says replace the first letter in the puzzle line with the second letter of the last word in the four word Blood, Sweat and Tears big hit in which the last two words rhyme. You must DO this instruction. You should replace the first letter (T) with an I (the hit was "And When I Die"). You now have: IPOLMHSTEROEPN Replace the 5th letter in the puzzle line with the first letter in the first name of the Beatle who sang lead on "Yellow Submarine." That Beatle was Ringo (Starr) so the 5th letter (M) would be replaced with an R. However you must IGNORE this instruction. Now change the next to last letter in the puzzle line to the next to last letter in the three-word Bruce Springsteen hit that begins with the word "Born". That hit was "Born To Run" so you would change the 13th letter (P) to a U. However you must IGNORE this instruction. Simon Says change the last "O" in the puzzle to the first letter in the first word of the act that sang "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)". You must DO this instruction. You should change the second O (the 11th letter) to an E (Edison Lighthouse was the act). You now have: IPOLMHSTEREEPN Simon Sez think about something that connects the New Christy Minstrels with the Kingsmen. With this hint to the final answer, you should think of "Green Green" and "The Jolly Green Giant" respectively. Those each have the word "Green" in the title and that's in the title of the the biggest hit by our mystery act. Change the 7th letter in the puzzle line to the letter which immediately precedes it in the alphabet. You would change the S to a T. However you must IGNORE this instruction. Simon Says unscramble the 14 letters in the puzzle line to form the name of the mystery oldies act! You must DO this instruction. And that would be THELEMONPIPERS ..... The Lemon Pipers! Of course, their big hit was "Green Tambourine." Click here to play this week's Oldies Brain Buster |
